Plot summary
Tommy Reilly produces a weekly entertainment news show for television, a job he keeps for the money. After his live-in girlfriend leaves him without warning, he moves in with his colleague Carpo, who offers him plenty of romantic advice. At a video store Tommy flirts with Maria Tedesko, a grammar school teacher recently divorced and wary of a new commitment, and they go out for coffee. Real estate broker Annie Matthews, unhappy in her marriage, shows him apartments while he searches for a place of his own. Elsewhere in the city, Benjamin Bazler works as an apartment house doorman and writes songs, and Ashley, a student from Iowa, waits tables at a coffee shop. Interviews with all of them, speaking to the camera about love and sex, are woven through the story.

- The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2001; following the terrorist attacks three days later Paramount Classics, which had reportedly spent $2 million on domestic rights, held the release to late November and deleted the twin towers from the poster.
- Edward Burns shot the film in only seventeen days on a budget of $1 million, and many of the locations used were within the same neighborhood in order to facilitate a quick move from one to the other.
- Dennis Farina, who plays Carpo, had all of his scenes shot in one day; he had agreed to the low budget production after meeting Burns on the set of Saving Private Ryan.
- Writer-director Edward Burns wrote the script for Sidewalks of New York while he was on the set of Saving Private Ryan.
