Plot summary
Elli Everson is an architect who works as a project manager at New England Design and Development in Stamford, Connecticut. Her boss, Anna Walters, sends her to Sand Dollar Cove, an hour up the coast, to buy beachfront land for a new resort. The town is recovering from a storm nine months earlier. The property belongs to Brody Bradshaw, a lawyer who returned and runs a bait and tackle shop on the land. He never meant to sell, and he is set against it once he learns the pier would come down. His great-grandfather built that pier, and the town considers it its heart; the storm left part of it wrecked and closed, and Brody cannot pay for repairs. He and Elli spend time together, and Elli is caught between representing her company and not wanting to hurt him.
