Ying-Chieh Han
Biography
Yin-Chieh Han was a stuntman and actor who came to films from the Peking Opera, which he joined at nine and left at eighteen. Born in 1927, he moved to Beijing as a small child. He reached Shanghai in 1946 and began working in the movies as a stuntman that same year, then set the films aside for a time to perform martial arts and circus acts in Hong Kong and Singapore. Back in Hong Kong he signed on with Shaw Bros. Film Studio as a stuntman and went on to choreograph fight scenes and take bit parts. In 1966 director Wu Kam-Chuen brought him to Taiwan, and they made several martial arts films together until 1970, when Han returned to Hong Kong for Golden Harvest. There he played his best known villain, Big Boss, in The Big Boss (1971), directed by Lo Wei. Han also directed a few films in the 1970s and died in 1991.
