Peter Jennings
Biography
Peter Jennings was a Canadian and American television journalist who became the sole anchor of ABC's World News Tonight in 1983. Born in Toronto, he hosted a CBC Radio show for children at age nine, then worked at CJOH-TV in Ottawa before co-anchoring CTV's national newscast. ABC News brought him to the United States in 1965 to anchor its flagship evening news, but critics attacked his inexperience and he soon returned to reporting, opening the network's Middle East bureau in Beirut in 1968. He rejoined World News Tonight as one of three anchors in 1978, and with Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather he was counted among the Big Three evening news anchors. Jennings was known for marathon coverage of breaking news, including the Gulf War, the millennium celebrations and the September 11 attacks, and he won two George Foster Peabody Awards. He died in 2005.
