Paul Heyman

Biography

Paul Heyman is an American professional wrestling manager, promoter and commentator who first gained notice in the late 1980s as the on-screen manager Paul E. Dangerously in promotions including World Championship Wrestling. In 1993 he took over the creative direction of Philadelphia's Eastern Championship Wrestling, bought the company two years later and renamed it Extreme Championship Wrestling, building a cult following with a raw, reality-based style. After ECW closed in 2001 he joined WWE as a commentator, writer and manager, most notably as Brock Lesnar's advocate, and he also worked on screen with CM Punk and Roman Reigns. He served as SmackDown's lead writer in the early 2000s and as Raw's executive director from 2019 to 2020, and in 2024 he was named to the WWE Hall of Fame. He played a sports announcer in Rollerball (2002).

  1. About the name

There, Paul Heyman took the ring name Paul E. Dangerously and aligned with Kevin Sullivan and Oliver Humperdink. The character drew inspiration from Michael Keaton's part in Johnny Dangerously.

  2. First role

In 1980, when he was 14, Heyman got in touch with Capitol Wrestling Corporation, the WWWF's parent company, and obtained a press pass for a Madison Square Garden event. There he posed for photos with heel managers Lou Albano, Fred Blassie and The Grand Wizard.

  3. A change of course

Heyman started at Studio 54 in 1985 as a photographer and became a producer. That year he put on "Wrestle Party '85", a wrestling-themed show at the venue where Bam Bam Bigelow debuted and Ric Flair, Dusty Rhodes and Magnum T.A. appeared.

  4. Behind the camera

As head booker of ECW, Heyman helped orchestrate the 1994 angle in which Shane Douglas rejected the NWA World Heavyweight Championship after winning it and declared the ECW title the only one he recognized, severing ECW's ties with the NWA.

  5. Behind the camera

In July 2002 Heyman became head writer of SmackDown!, a role he held until February 2003. His creative direction stressed athletic competition, and the show beat Raw in television ratings and live event attendance.

  6. Behind the award

Heyman became the first person named to the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2024, with the announcement coming shortly before the event, and he was inducted during WrestleMania weekend.
