Nina Li Chi
Biography
Nina Li Chi is a Chinese actress who was one of the most prominent leading ladies in Hong Kong cinema during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Born in Shanghai on December 31, 1961, she grew up influenced by her father, who taught in actor studios in Shanghai and Canton. In 1981 she followed him to Hong Kong, initially working in a furniture store before studying economics and business in the United States. Her breakthrough came in 1986 when she returned to Hong Kong and won the Miss Asia contest. Early on, audiences mocked her Cantonese accent and dismissed her beauty as tasteless, but with help from established figures, filmmakers soon recognized her as the most hardworking actress in the city. From 1987 to 1992 she worked alongside stars such as Jackie Chan, Sammo Kam-Bo Hung, Yun-Fat Chow and Samuel Hui. She retired from acting in 1992.
