Marion Davies
Biography
Marion Davies was an American actress and producer who started out as a chorus girl before becoming one of the leading silent film stars. Reared in Brooklyn, she left school in her teens for the stage and danced in the Ziegfeld Follies. The newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst financed and promoted her films through his Cosmopolitan Pictures, and by 1924 she was the top female box office draw in Hollywood. She had hits in costume dramas such as When Knighthood Was in Flower and showed a gift for comedy in King Vidor's Show People (1928) and The Patsy (1928). She moved into sound films with Marianne (1929) and The Hollywood Revue of 1929 (1929), later appeared in Page Miss Glory (1935) for Warner Brothers, and retired in 1937. The 1941 film Citizen Kane, whose Susan Alexander Kane was widely assumed to be based on her, clouded her reputation, though later critics, including Pauline Kael, argued she had been unfairly maligned.

A role that slipped away
In 1943, Davies was offered the part of Mrs. Brown in Claudia, but Hearst talked her out of accepting a supporting role, since he felt it would damage her starring career.
