Joyce DeWitt
Biography
Joyce DeWitt is an American actress known for playing Janet Wood in the ABC sitcom Three's Company. Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, she grew up in Speedway, Indiana, and studied theater at Ball State University before earning an MFA from UCLA. She made her television debut on Baretta and obtained the Three's Company role after being cast in its second pilot, playing Janet from 1977 to 1984 and reprising the part on The Ropers in 1979. Her later screen credits include Finder of Lost Loves, Spring Fling!, Cybill, Living Single, Hope Island, and Call of the Wild (2009). She co-produced and hosted the 2003 NBC film Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Three's Company. On stage, she appeared in Noises Off, Married Alive, Miss Abigail's Guide to Dating, Mating & Marriage, Dinner with Friends, Love Letters, and Nunsense.

A change of course
While she was a student at UCLA, DeWitt worked as a secretary. She kept that job until she made her first appearance on television, in an episode of Baretta.
Early training
DeWitt earned a theater degree from Ball State University, then enrolled in UCLA's theater MFA program after a summer stock director urged her, winning a fellowship and scholarship there.
Behind the camera
In 2003, DeWitt served as co-producer and host of the NBC-TV television film Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Three's Company.
A first
In 2023, DeWitt appeared for the first time in a country music video, the ballad "Home" by the Davisson Brothers Band, which the video says captures the comfort and nostalgia of going back to where everything started.
