John Legend
Biography
Born in Springfield, Ohio, John Legend is a singer, songwriter and pianist who got his start behind the scenes in music, working on Lauryn Hill's Everything Is Everything and singing uncredited backing vocals for other artists, before Kanye West signed him as the first act on his GOOD Music label. Get Lifted (2004) arrived through that deal and brought him three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist, on the strength of the ballad Ordinary People. Later records included Once Again, Evolver, Love in the Future and Bigger Love, the last of which took a Grammy for Best R&B Album. Across his career he has collected 12 Grammys, an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for Glory from Selma, and a Tony for co-producing Jitney (2017). He took the title part in NBC's Jesus Christ Superstar (2018), earning an Emmy as a producer, and appeared in Soul Men (2008).
