Biography

Jacqui Chan was a Chinese Trinidadian dancer, actor, and singer. Born in Port of Spain, she moved to England at sixteen and studied at the Elmhurst Ballet School. She started a three-year Royal Academy of Dancing teaching program but left after a year, when she won roles in two stagings of Teahouse of the August Moon. She became a principal dancer in the West End staging of The King and I, then joined the London stage version of The World of Suzie Wong. In the film adaptation, she went against type as the plain Gwennie and earned appreciative notice. She later took the lead in the 1961 Australian stage production. Her credits included television roles in Marco Polo, The Saint, Dixon of Dock Green, and the films Krakatoa, East of Java (1968) and Cleopatra. She released the 1960 single But No One Knows and performed a Mandarin passage on the 1967 song Kites by Simon Dupree and the Big Sound.
