Isao Kimura
Biography
Born on June 22, 1923, Isao Kimura was an actor who appeared in several major works by Akira Kurosawa. He took on many kinds of characters while working with Kurosawa. He first played Yusa, a war-damaged hoodlum, in Stray Dog, giving the part antagonism and palpable pain. At the opposite extreme, he was Katsushiro, the innocent, hero-worshiping, faun-like apprentice, in Seven Samurai (1954). Although Kimura was 31 when he played the role, he looked the part perfectly and brought sympathy and passion to the wide-eyed teenage warrior. These two roles demonstrated how he portrayed a wide range of characters. After a long film career, he founded and directed an acting company. He died in 1981.
