Harry Reems

Biography

Harry Reems was an American pornographic actor and, later, a real estate agent. Born Herbert John Streicher in the Bronx in 1947, he began in off-Broadway theater with La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, the New York Theater Ensemble and the National Shakespeare Company. His best-known roles were Doctor Young in Deep Throat (1972) and The Teacher in The Devil in Miss Jones (1973). He appeared in roughly 140 feature-length sexploitation and hardcore films from 1971 to 1974 and again from 1982 to 1985. He also took mainstream parts in horror films such as Demented (1980) and To All a Goodnight (1980), and he was interviewed in the documentary Inside Deep Throat (2005). He published a memoir, Here Comes Harry Reems, in 1975, returned to the stage in The Office Murders (1979) and What the Butler Saw (1981), retired from performing in adult films in 1985, and won an AVN Award for Best Actor for Trashy Lady in 1986.

Reems was cast as Coach Calhoun in the 1978 musical film Grease, but Sid Caesar took over the part because people worried his notoriety would harm ticket sales in the Southern United States.
