Funke Akindele
Biography
Funke Akindele is a Nigerian filmmaker, actress, director, and producer who came to notice through I Need to Know, the sitcom she appeared in from 1998 to 2002 as a clever secondary school pupil. Her big break was the 2008 film Jenifa, which earned her a 2009 Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. The character returned in The Return of Jenifa, a 2011 sequel, and in Jenifa's Diary, a soft reboot made for television. Best Actress in a Comedy honors at the Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards followed in 2016, 2017, 2020, and 2022, and she holds the record for the most wins by an actress there. She moved into English-language Nollywood films in 2013 and starred alongside Omoni Oboli in the comedy Moms at War in 2018. Her first feature as director was the 2019 political drama Your Excellency. She has produced and directed some of the highest-grossing films in Nollywood.
