Biography

Franco Franchi was a Sicilian comic actor who, with Ciccio Ingrassia, formed one of the best-loved pairings of Italian comedy. Born in Palermo, he began performing on Sicilian streets in the ballad-singer tradition. The two made their debut in 1954 at the Costa theater in Castelvetrano, and in 1962 Lucio Fulci put them in their first leading roles, I due della legione straniera. Their output was frantic, about forty films between 1964 and 1966. They made parodies of every kind, from westerns to thrillers, and in 1967 Pier Paolo Pasolini cast them in Che cosa sono le nuvole?, an episode of Capriccio all'italiana with Totò, while Franco appeared with Buster Keaton in Due marines e un generale. Indovina chi viene a merenda (1969) was their answer to the American film Indovina chi viene a cena. Their careers briefly separated in the mid-1970s before they reunited on television, and Franchi died in 1992.
