Emmett King

Biography

Born in Griffin in 1865, Emmett King was an American actor who worked in theater and film. He began in theater and made his Broadway debut in 1899 with the farce The Father of His Country, a work he both wrote and performed in. Over the next fifteen years he appeared in several more Broadway productions, among them Mary Jane's Pa and a 1911 staging of Ben-Hur. He moved into movies with a featured part in the 1917 silent Mary Jane's Pa, repeating a role he had played on stage nearly ten years earlier. King became known as a character actor and performed across the silent and sound eras. His later credits included Little Lord Fauntleroy (1921), The Beautiful and Damned (1922), The Prisoner of Zenda (1937), The Man in the Iron Mask (1939), and Reap the Wild Wind (1942). He ended his film career with a small senatorial part in the 1944 biopic Wilson. He died in 1953.
