Dudley Digges
Biography
Dudley Digges was an Irish-born actor, stage director, and producer who worked mainly in the United States. Born in Dublin in 1879, he became interested in acting after meeting the theater directors William and Frank Fay and joined W. G. Fay's Irish National Dramatic Company. He went to America with fellow actors in 1904 and succeeded as both actor and producer, serving at times as stage manager for Charles Frohman and George Arliss. During the 1920s he gained a reputation on Broadway, and one of his best-known parts was Ficsur when Ferenc Molnár's Liliom was first staged there in 1921. He founded the Maverick Theater in Woodstock, New York, in 1924, and later worked as a director on Broadway. Turning to film by 1929, he appeared in more than 50 movies, including The Maltese Falcon (1931), in which he played Casper Gutman, and The Invisible Man (1933).
