Biography

Dorothy Comingore was an American actress of stage and screen, born Margaret Louise Comingore in Los Angeles and raised largely in Oakland, California. She began performing on radio and in the theater under the name Kay Winters, then took small film parts, sometimes uncredited, as Linda Winters. A notice by Charles Chaplin while she was appearing in a Carmel playhouse led to a screen test and a contract with Warner Bros. Orson Welles then chose her for the role of Susan Alexander in his first feature, Citizen Kane (1941), and reviewers were enthusiastic, with the Los Angeles Times and The Hollywood Reporter among those who praised her. She also appeared in The Hairy Ape (1944). Her last film role came in The Big Night (1951), and she did not perform on screen or stage afterward.
