Bobby Moore

Biography

Bobby Moore was an English footballer who captained West Ham United for more than a decade and led England to the 1966 World Cup. Born in Barking, he joined West Ham in 1956 and made his first-team debut two years later, going on to play over 600 games for the club across 16 years and winning the FA Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup. He was named FWA Footballer of the Year in 1964 and took the England captaincy in 1963, lifting the World Cup at Wembley in 1966; his 108 caps were a national record when he retired from international football in 1973. He later played for Fulham and managed Oxford City and Southend United. On screen he played Terry Brady in Escape to Victory (1981) and appeared as himself in Till Death Do Us Part and The Alf Garnett Saga.

Moore was the first footballer to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, taking the award in 1966, and no other footballer won it for another 24 years until Paul Gascoigne in 1990.
A first
Moore earned his last England cap, his 108th, in a friendly against Italy on 14 November 1973, a match England lost 1-0. That total put him ahead of Bobby Charlton by two appearances as England's most capped player.

In England's second match, against Brazil, Moore made a tackle on Jairzinho that was so precise and clean it has been called the perfect tackle and the "tackle of the century." After the game he swapped shirts with Pelé.
Getting ready for a role
After Wolfgang Overath fouled him midway inside the German half, Moore got up quickly and sent an instant free kick onto Hurst's head, a move practiced at West Ham. Hurst scored.
