Biography

Bobbito Garcia, a New York-born DJ, radio host, writer and Rock Steady Crew member, began his career as an intern at Def Jam. After Wesleyan University, he spent much of the 1990s co-hosting The Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show with Adrian Bartos on WKCR, Columbia University's station. That program gave early airtime to unsigned rappers such as Nas, Jay-Z, Big Pun and The Notorious B.I.G., and in 1998 The Source called it the greatest hip-hop radio show in history. Garcia started the vinyl label Fondle 'Em Records in 1995 and later created Bounce, a quarterly streetball magazine, while also writing about sneaker culture in books like Where'd You Get Those? He appeared in the sneaker documentary Just for Kicks (2005), hosted ESPN Films' It's the Shoes, and directed the basketball documentary Doin' It in the Park (2012), the 2015 Showtime film Stretch and Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives, and Rock Rubber 45s in 2018.
