Art Mix

Biography

Art Mix, born George Washington Kesterson in Pike County, was an American character actor who worked in films from the 1920s to the mid-1940s. Before acting, he performed as a circus artist and boxer. He first appeared under his real name, Kesterson, and later received the stage name Art Mix from Victor Adamson. Contract issues caused him to leave Adamson and work for producer J. Charles Davis. Mix appeared in more than 200 film shorts and features, often in small or bit parts, though he occasionally took featured roles, such as in Border Devils (1932) with Harry Carey, and leading roles, as in the B-western The Rawhide Terror (1935). His notable features include Sagebrush Trail (1933) with John Wayne, the 1939 classic Gunga Din, and the Academy Award-winning The Westerner with Gary Cooper and Walter Brennan. He died in 1972.

  1. About the name

Victor Adamson gave Kesterson the stage name Art Mix. Adamson reasoned that a cowboy called Art Mix would be linked to western star Tom Mix, and that small-town exhibitors unable to pay for Tom Mix's films would likely book cheaper ones sold under the Art Mix name.
