Biography

Akemi Negishi was a Japanese actress whose career began when Josef von Sternberg noticed her dancing on a cabaret stage and cast her in Anatahan (1954). That role, a seductress who leads soldiers astray, set a pattern of exotic parts that were unusual for a Japanese actress of her time. She became a favorite of Akira Kurosawa and Ishirô Honda, who looked past her typecasting and drew from her some of the strongest work by a Japanese actress in the 1950s and 1960s. Her memorable turns for Kurosawa included The Lower Depths (1957) and Dodes'ka-den (1970), while outside Japan she was best known for leading the dance of tribute to Kong in King Kong vs. Godzilla (1963). After Dodes'ka-den, she appeared to retire. She died in 2008.
