Plot summary
Zoya is a Muslim girl in Varanasi, and Kundan, whose family is Tamil Brahmin, has loved her since they were children. He woos her persistently. Her parents grow suspicious and send her to Aligarh. While Zoya is away, Kundan spends time with her family and becomes dear to them. Zoya later goes to JNU in Delhi, and there she falls for Akram Zaidi, a student leader, socialist and budding politician.

- Pakistan's Central Board of Film Censors banned Raanjhanaa before its scheduled release there, after importer Amjad Rasheed received a letter saying the film showed an inapt image of a Muslim girl, played by Sonam Kapoor, falling in love with a Hindu man and having an affair with him.
- In 2025 the film's climax was altered with AI for a re-release; director Rai distanced himself from the version, Eros called it a respectful reinterpretation rather than tampering, and Dhanush said the change stripped the film of its very soul but the concerned parties went ahead anyway.
- Shahid Kapoor and Sonakshi Sinha were signed as Raanjhanaa's lead pair in late 2011 but dropped out to work on Prabhudeva's next film, R... Rajkumar.
- Aditi Rao Hydari was initially set to play Kundan's childhood friend in Raanjhanaa but opted out due to lack of availability and was replaced by Swara Bhaskar.
- Dhanush, making his Bollywood debut, was signed as Kundan in January 2012 and reportedly took training to gain fluency in Hindi in order to obtain the role.
- While filming in October 2012, Dhanush injured his shoulder during an action sequence for his Tamil film Maryan, so Raanjhanaa's scheduled dance sequences were postponed and shot in Varanasi on 19 December 2012.
- To avoid footage leaks during Raanjhanaa's shoot, over a hundred potential crew members were made present at the filming venue.
- Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol's dialogue scenes were shot at Delhi's Indian Institute of Mass Communication campus, but permission to shoot inside was denied by the college authorities, so the unit shot scenes at Amity International School, Noida.
