Plot summary
Kimberly Reed grew up in Helena, Montana, in the 1970s as Paul, the middle of three brothers, a high school football co-captain and her class valedictorian who never felt at ease in the gender assigned to her at birth. She lives in New York now, and she and her girlfriend Claire Jones return for the reunion, her first since her transition. Facing her old classmates makes her nervous. Facing Marc, the McKerrows' adopted oldest son, makes her more nervous; the two have not spoken in ten years, held apart by sibling rivalry, by Marc's difficulty seeing her as female, and by the brain injury he suffered in a car crash at twenty-one. She hopes that helping him meet his birth family will give them a point of connection.

Marc McKerrow was Rebecca Welles's son and the secret grandson of Orson Welles and Rita Hayworth: Rebecca gave birth to him secretly on March 31, 1966, when she was 21, Welles never knew about his grandson, and Hayworth arranged the adoption without letting Rebecca see or hold her son.SPOILER
Marc McKerrow died in his sleep on June 18, 2010, at the age of 44, only four months after Kimberly Reed's Oprah appearance; his death came from complications of a nocturnal seizure related to his car accident.SPOILER
Marc McKerrow petitioned the courts to open his adoption file, then learned his true lineage through the adoption agency and contacted his biological mother, Rebecca Welles, shortly before she died. Her eldest sister, Chris Welles Feder, said the two never met because cancer advanced so fast, though Marc attended her funeral.
