Plot summary
Centuries ago, a secret order inside the Catholic Church, the Brotherhood of Sleep, finds a cylinder filled with a green liquid and conceals it even from the Vatican, in time moving it to Los Angeles. With the order's last member dead, a priest searching the man's things finds a key and follows it under a monastery, where the cylinder rests. He asks the quantum physicist Professor Howard Birack to study the object, and Birack brings students and other scientists, among them Brian Marsh and Catherine Danforth, into the building. As they work through the Brotherhood's old manuscripts and test the contents, homeless people outside grow hostile and seal the group in. Measurements show the cylinder to be millions of years old, openable only from within, and holding a substance that evolves with intent rather than decaying.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Prince of Darkness (1987)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Alice Cooper was cast as a possessed homeless man at his manager Shep Gordon's suggestion that he also record a song for the film, and Cooper let the crew use his stage show's real "impaling device" for the scene where his character kills Etchinson.
- For the film's recurring dream sequences of a shadowy figure at a church doorway, John Carpenter shot actor Jessie Ferguson's movements on video and then re-photographed that footage off a television set to give the images a dislocated, live-broadcast feel, and Carpenter himself provided the disembodied voice narrating each dream.
- The film's eerie dream narrations went on to be sampled by other musicians, turning up on DJ Shadow's debut album Endtroducing..... and on Marilyn Manson's track "Down in the Park."
