Plot summary
Steve Kady, an enumerator for the Census Bureau, is sent to the isolated town of Rockwell Falls, North Dakota, to interview residents about the population. A pothole on the road destroys two of his tires, and Deputy Bobby Caine drives him into town and finds him lodging in the home Courtney Lovett shares with her mother. Townspeople speak of "the fever" and treat Kady as though he had moved there for good. His research shows the count has stood at exactly 436 for more than a century, and locals credit God with the fate of those who try to leave. Kady grows close to Courtney, which troubles Caine, who also loves her, and he befriends Amanda, a girl being treated at Dr. Greaver's clinic.
