Plot summary
The myth of Phaedra and the tragedy of Hippolytus lie behind the story, which keeps some tragic elements of the old drama and moves the action into the present, into the world of ship owners and their families in Paris, London and on the Greek island of Hydra. Thanos is a shipping tycoon. Phaedra is his second wife, and Alexis is his son by a first marriage; the two have grown estranged. Phaedra meets Alexis, and an attraction takes hold of both of them. She talks him into traveling to Paris, where Thanos is. Neither of them is able to master what they feel.
