Plot summary

A filmmaker spends a year inside the New York Times newsroom, following the reporters of the Media Desk, a desk set up to report on how the media industry is changing. Online news has overtaken print, newspapers are going bankrupt, and the paper itself faces questions about its future. The desk covers the WikiLeaks publication of Afghan war logs, the iPad's release, the Tribune Company's bankruptcy, the Comcast merger with NBC Universal, and the Jayson Blair and Judith Miller cases. David Carr, a media columnist, tracks print journalism's metamorphosis while the paper weighs charging readers online and asks its journalists to connect directly with their audience. Debates across cubicles, jockeying for on-record quotes and page-one pitching continue.
