Plot summary
Duff Anderson works on the railroad and lives on the move with his co-workers. On a night off he walks into the nearby town and stops at a church meeting where there is food and gospel music, and he meets Josie, a schoolteacher and the preacher's daughter. They date despite the objections of her father and stepmother, who find Duff uneducated, irreligious and arrogant. Duff tells Josie he does not want to get married. He visits his young son, who lives with an indifferent stepmother, and his drunken father, Will, who lives off his girlfriend Lee. Duff decides that a settled family matters more to him than drifting.
