Plot summary
Ann is twenty-three and works as a janitor. She lives in a trailer in her mother's backyard with her husband Don and their daughters Penny and Patsy. After she collapses in pain, a doctor tells her she has metastatic ovarian cancer and two months left to live. She tells her family the trouble is anemia and keeps the diagnosis to herself. She begins noting down the things she still wants: a new haircut, cassette messages for the girls' birthdays until they are eighteen, someone to take her place with Don and the children, and a night with a man other than her husband. At a laundromat she meets Lee, who finishes her laundry while she sleeps.
