Plot summary
Paul Robaix, a famous director, has made his wife Lucy Dell the leading lady of all his greatest films, and she is the more famous of the two. Yearning for a success of his own, he plans to shoot Puccini's Madame Butterfly in Japan. A Japanese heroine in a tragedy lets him cast someone other than Lucy, a blue-eyed, red-headed comedy actress, without wounding her. She flies to Japan as a surprise, and at a dinner party she appears disguised as a geisha, meaning to reveal herself during the meal. Everyone there, her husband included, takes her for a Japanese woman. The studio has given Paul only enough money to shoot in black and white with inexpensive singers, so Lucy auditions for Butterfly, with the studio's knowledge but not her husband's.
