Plot summary
Karen, a physical therapist in Los Angeles, gave birth at fourteen; her mother arranged for the baby to be given up for adoption, and Karen has struggled to grow close to anyone since. She looks after Nora, who is terminally ill, and works with Paco, a widower whose friendliness she meets with suspicion. Elizabeth, adopted as a child, is a lawyer whose life holds little warmth; hired at Paul's firm, she begins an affair with him. Lucy, a baker, cannot have children of her own, and her husband Joseph is not supportive of adopting. Through a Catholic agency, Lucy and Joseph meet a young pregnant woman who is considering them as parents.
