Plot summary
A NASA probe sent to check for extraterrestrial life in the solar system crashed in Mexico, and the life forms that followed spread through the border region. The northern part of Mexico is under quarantine, with American and Mexican troops trying to contain the creatures, and a wall runs along the border. Andrew Kaulder, an American photojournalist, gets a call from his employer, who wants him to locate his daughter, Samantha Wynden, and bring her back to the United States. Andrew finds her in a Central American hospital, and the two board a train, only to learn the tracks ahead are damaged. Word reaches them that sea and air travel out of the country will close within days, so they set out to hitchhike to the coast.

- Gareth Edwards created all 250 visual effects shots himself in his bedroom over five months, using off-the-shelf Adobe software, ZBrush and Autodesk 3ds Max, and managed two shots a day until the creature shots stalled for two months.
- Gareth Edwards wanted a real couple for the leads, so Scoot McNairy sent him a picture of his girlfriend, actress Whitney Able, whom Edwards thought "too good-looking"; he changed his mind after meeting them and cast them both.
- Many of the film's locations were used without permission, and most of the extras were non-actors who were already at those places and were persuaded to appear, improvising their actions.

Gareth Edwards originally had the film's ending at both the beginning and the end; after disagreeing with the producers over its placement, he put the chronological ending at the start, closing the film immediately after Andrew and Samantha kiss.
