Trailer

Plot summary

Doctor Vladimir Nekhorvich, a bio-genetics scientist in Sydney, gets word to the IMF that Biocyte Pharmaceuticals, the firm that employs him, made him build the Chimera virus as a weapon, with the cure Bellerophon as the profit behind it. He takes the cure with him toward Atlanta, but Sean Ambrose, an IMF agent who has gone rogue, takes it from him and disappears. Ethan Hunt is briefed in Seville, told to recover both, and recruits Nyah Nordoff-Hall, a professional thief and Ambrose's former girlfriend, who traces Ambrose to Sydney with an injectable tracking device. Ethan gathers the computer hacker Luther Stickell and the helicopter pilot Billy Baird, while Nyah pretends to take up her old relationship with Ambrose.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Mission: Impossible II (2000)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • For Ethan Hunt's opening free solo climb, shot at Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah, Tom Cruise overrode studio safety concerns and filmed with no net, only a harness and thin wire; he tore his shoulder jumping between cliff sections.
  • The final fight between Ethan Hunt and Sean Ambrose used a real knife, rigged to a cable and measured to stop a quarter of an inch from Tom Cruise's eyeball; Cruise asked Dougray Scott to press down with full strength.
  • The first cut of Mission: Impossible 2 ran three and a half hours, and editor Stuart Baird's uncredited re-edits to it and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider were a bid to get Paramount to hire him to direct Star Trek: Nemesis.
  • Ian McKellen was offered the part of Mission Commander Swanbeck but turned it down because of a London theater engagement, instead playing Magneto in X-Men and Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings trilogy at the same time.
  • Dougray Scott decided not to play Wolverine in X-Men: problems with Mission: Impossible 2's screenplay and budget, scheduling conflicts and an injury from a motorcycle accident during filming all counted against it.
  • Thandiwe Newton said Tom Cruise was stressed and upset while shooting her balcony scene because she had "the shittiest lines"; they swapped roles as practice, which pushed her "into a place of terror and insecurity" and led her to call Jonathan Demme.
  • Dan Piponi, Kim Libreri and George Borshukov created the film's virtual backgrounds, photographing a location extensively and reproducing it as a photorealistic render using high dynamic range imagery, then placing actors inside that environment.
