Plot summary
Ten years after escaping a North Vietnamese prison camp, Colonel James Braddock is asked by an American delegation to return to Vietnam with a government team checking reports that soldiers listed as missing in action are still held there. In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnamese officials belittle Braddock and accuse him of crimes against them. Braddock obtains evidence, then travels to Thailand and looks up Jack "Tuck" Tucker, a friend from his Army days who now runs a black market operation. The two plan a mission into the jungle to free the prisoners, while a man who tortured Braddock in the camp is after him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Missing in Action (1984)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The two Missing in Action films were shot back-to-back, with Lance Hool's POW-years film meant to be released first; when the studio judged Joseph Zito's rescue film the stronger commercial bet, Hool's was turned into the prequel Missing in Action 2.
- Chuck Norris dedicated the Missing in Action films to his younger brother, a private in the 101st Airborne Division who was killed in June 1970 in Vietnam while on patrol in the defense of Firebase Ripcord.
- The hero's surname, Braddock, came from Benjamin Braddock, Dustin Hoffman's character in The Graduate; the producers wanted a Vietnam War hero named after a lazy Californian student.
- The concept for the film grew out of a 1983 treatment that James Cameron wrote for Rambo: First Blood Part II, which was circulating in Hollywood at the time.
