Plot summary
In the Minoan Bronze Age, King Deucalion's order sends eight young people from the village of Thena to his capital every three years. There they are sent into a labyrinth beneath the palace, to the Minotaur, honored as a Minoan god. Theo, the son of the village chief Cyrnan, still grieves for Ffion, his beloved, who was taken in an earlier offering. A leper tells him that Ffion is alive inside the labyrinth, so Theo goes in place of one of the chosen, against his father's wishes, and travels to the capital with Danu, Morna, Tyro, Didi, Vena, Ziko and Nan. He does not accept that the beast is a god, and he means to kill it.
