Plot summary
Marei makes his living in the watermelon trade, and Gamalat is his impulsive wife. Men sent by his grandfather seize him and carry him to upper Egypt, where he learns that he is the worthy heir to a large fortune in diamonds. His brothers-in-law want the money, so Marei needs a safe place to keep the gems. He puts the diamonds inside two of his watermelons. When he wakes the next morning, Gamalat has sold both of them. The fortune is now inside two melons that have passed out of his hands, and Marei has to retrieve them before they are consumed.
