Plot summary
Charles Manson led a following he called the Family, and the film traces the group's origins and the events surrounding the Tate-LaBianca murders. Vincent Bugliosi, the prosecuting attorney, discusses the case, and members of the Family, among them Lynette Fromme, Sandra Good and Mary Brunner, give interviews. Charles Manson himself appears. Footage was shot at the Family's Spahn Ranch compound, at Devil's Canyon and at the Barker Ranch hideout in Death Valley, and at the Hall of Justice in Los Angeles. Two former associates, Brooks Poston and Paul Watkins, created the soundtrack music, which also includes music performed by the Family. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature.

- After Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme tried to assassinate President Gerald Ford in 1975, judge Thomas McBride banned the film to protect her right to a fair and speedy trial, and the ACLU took the case to the Supreme Court.
- Robert Hendrickson spent much of the 1990s suing eBay for allowing bootleg DVD copies of the film to be sold, which he attributed to an alleged mafia plot.
- Slipknot sampled the film on 742617000027, the opening track of their 1999 self-titled album; its line "The whole thing, I think it's sick" comes from an interview with a former cellmate of Manson family member Susan Atkins.
