Plot summary
Jangaiah, who hopes to become a police constable, shares a home with his brother Komaraiah, an auto driver, and Komaraiah's wife Lakshmi. Their village is alive with talk of dark magic and chethabadi, and their neighbors are a drunkard and his wife. The sarpanch who rules the village is ruthless, and he harasses the women there, including the drunkard's wife. When the sarpanch's men fight the drunkard, Komaraiah asks for the drunkard's release. Days later the sarpanch dies in a car crash. Then Kavitha, a pregnant woman, is taken with labor pains and dies in hospital. Her family visits a tantric, who says black magic was worked on her and that the culprit must complete the last stage near her body, so they hire a watchman to keep watch over the corpse.
