Plot summary
Just into his twenties, Huddie Ledbetter leaves his father's house in the segregated South and makes his way to Shreveport, Louisiana, where he turns up at a Fannin Street brothel. The madam, Miss Eula, takes a liking to him, gives him the nickname Leadbelly, and has him sing and play at the bar. When her hold on him tightens and police break up one of his shows, he rides out on a train and an old man sells him a twelve-string acoustic guitar. He picks cotton for a while, then travels on and meets Blind Lemon Jefferson, with whom he begins playing shows. At one of those shows, a drunken white man threatens him.
