Plot summary
In Flanders, John of Austria, the King's illegitimate half-brother, commands the Spanish forces, and he sends his secretary Juan de Escobedo to El Escorial to press Philip II for money. The money is meant to free Mary, Queen of Scots and marry her to John of Austria, beginning a new royal line. Escobedo, presumptuous and arrogant, also witnesses the romance between the Princess of Éboli, Ana de Mendoza, and the royal secretary Antonio Pérez, and learns of their plan to stop aid from reaching Flanders, which would damage their financial interests. At court, the Duke of Alba, seventy-one, has been pushed to a lesser role by the rise of Antonio Pérez. When Juan de Escobedo is murdered, the priest Mateo Vázquez is charged with the inquiry.
