Plot summary
After her father is slandered as a practitioner of black magic in the shaman massacres that struck Banyuwangi in May 1998, Rahayu feels unsafe and decides to leave the town, and the family moves to her home village of Jetis, in Yogyakarta. There the neighbors shun and terrorize them, taking the household for a shaman's family. Rahayu tells herself at first that she understands the residents' reactions, and she tries to stay strong by praying. Something inside her interferes. She cannot keep her concentration in prayer and forgets the number of rakaat she has performed. The disturbance is blamed on a genie nicknamed Khanzab.
