Plot summary
In high school Chris Brander was overweight and secretly in love with his best friend Jamie Palamino. He wrote the confession in her yearbook, and at their graduation party her ex-boyfriend read it aloud to the crowd. Jamie told him she loved him like a brother, and he left town vowing to do better. Ten years later he is slim and successful, a record producer in Los Angeles who dates freely. His boss KC wants him to escort the singer Samantha James to Paris so she will sign with their label, but the jet catches fire and lands in New Jersey, near Chris's hometown. He takes Samantha to his mother's house and runs into Jamie, now tending bar while she studies for graduate school.

- Ryan Reynolds' then-fiancee Alanis Morissette made a cameo as herself after the casting director asked for 'an Alanis Morissette type' and Reynolds said he knew the real person; the scene was ultimately cut and only appears on the DVD.
- Anna Faris was cast as the pop star Samantha James, a character Kumble recalled as Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton and Britney Spears thrown into a blender together. Hilton herself had auditioned for the role of James at one point.
