Plot summary
Bad News Johnson, a con artist from Memphis, and his slow-witted companion July Jones reach Dallas, Texas, with twenty-five cents between them and no place to stay. Johnson procures a room at the boarding house of Louella "Mama Lou" Holiday by presenting himself as Whitney Vanderbilt, an acting teacher and film actor from Hollywood, while Jones takes the name Cornbread Green. Mama Lou lets the two men stay for free in exchange for poise lessons for her daughter Honey Dew, who has entered a beauty contest. Papa Sam, her husband, is a gambler who was sent to the market and sits at Johnny's Juke Joint instead. Their youngest daughter Florida is at the juke joint as well, where the owner, Johnny, has offered to take her to Chicago.
