Plot summary

Vaishakan holds a government post but gives his time to a script he wants to direct, presenting it to the producer Achayan, who tells him the story is not worth producing. Suspended for neglecting his duties, he takes a five-year leave without pay to chase filmmaking. Priyadarshan, meanwhile, tends his family's rubber farm in a village and sells the produce, weighed down by debts left by his father's suicide and by the cost of marrying off his sister. An appointment letter arrives, offering him Vaishakan's vacant seat at the Taluk Office in Kochi. Overjoyed, he takes the temporary post. His earnest ways amuse his city colleagues, he shares a room with Kannappan, and he falls in love with Meera.
