Plot summary
Jean Campana, a French ethnologist raised in the Amazon, brings the shaman Wanù to Paris to campaign for the rain forest. In a hotel elevator the shaman takes an interest in François Perrin, a gambler who broke a bet and is avoiding the men chasing him. Wanù pinches Perrin's nose and names him the chosen one. That night the shaman arrives at Perrin's apartment, drugs him and draws ritual markings on him, joining the two by magic. The next day Wanù collapses with a heart attack and believes his soul has been stolen. He asks Perrin to join Campana on a journey into the jungle, because his soul has taken the shape of a jaguar.
