Plot summary
Across three generations, the Grombergs rank among New York's successful families, though each of them carries a problem. Mitchell, the patriarch, has health problems that followed a stroke and struggles with the thought of his own mortality. Alex, his son, is a lawyer at the firm Mitchell founded, and he doubts whether the work is worth much and where he belongs in the family. Asher, Alex's son, is at college, where parties come before his studies. Eli, who is eleven, is very bright and awkward with other people, and the years ahead look difficult. Alex stands between them all, a husband to Rebecca, a father to two sons and a son himself, wary of repeating what he inherited.
