Plot summary
Maze Prison in Northern Ireland holds IRA inmates who lost their political status and refuse to wear the prison uniform. In 1981 Davey Gillen is admitted, classed as a non-conforming prisoner and sent to a cell with nothing but a blanket. His cellmate Gerry Campbell has covered the walls with excrement for the no wash protest. Officers drag the men out, beat them and cut the hair and beards they have grown. Bobby Sands spits at Raymond Lohan, who punches him and shaves him.

- To play Bobby Sands, Michael Fassbender lived on under 900 calories a day for ten weeks, eating berries, nuts and sardines on a nutritionist's plan with regular medical checks. He skipped, did yoga and walked four and a half miles a day, but could not sleep and stopped seeing his friends.
- The conversation between Sands and the priest runs as a single unbroken 17-minute take with the camera never moving. Liam Cunningham moved into Michael Fassbender's flat to prepare, the two running the scene twelve to fifteen times a day, and Fassbender said they needed only five takes.
