Plot summary
Carly Jones, her twin brother Nick, her boyfriend Wade Felton and their friends Dalton Chapman, Paige Edwards and Blake Johnson are on their way to a football game. They camp overnight in a wooded stretch of Louisiana, and a stranger in a pickup truck pays them a visit before driving off. In the morning Wade finds that his car's fan belt has been cut, and Lester, a local, drives him and Carly to Ambrose, the nearest town, while the others continue to the game. Ambrose is a ghost town, and mechanic Bo Sinclair promises them a replacement belt once he has attended a funeral. While they wait, Carly and Wade wander into Trudy's House of Wax, a museum whose figures and walls are made of wax.

- Roughly 20 tons of wax went into the sets, coated mainly in beeswax with other waxes mixed in to reach a soft enough texture. Every surface had to be restored and reset by hand after each take.
- A team of sculptors, mould makers and technicians spent seven months before filming even began making more than a hundred detailed wax figures, every one of them modeled on a real person.
- For the sequence in which his character is coated in wax and moulded into an exhibit, Jared Padalecki was put through a full 3D body scan by the KNB EFX Group in Los Angeles.

Paris Hilton's casting annoyed some horror fans, so the marketing turned the hostility into a slogan. The campaign was called "See Paris Die" and promised her a gruesome end; Hilton joined in and made shirts carrying the line.
