Plot summary
One of the first direct cinema documentaries, the film was shot over five weeks in the spring of 1968 at Northeast High School in Philadelphia, and it presents a single school day drawn from that footage. Cameras stay with the students and the faculty as classes meet and teachers and administrators deal with the teenagers in their charge. It aired on PBS, and it was kept out of Philadelphia theaters at the time because of concerns about a possible lawsuit. In 1991 it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. A second documentary on high school, set at a school in New York City, followed in 1994.
