Plot summary
Parmistan is a small mountain nation in the Hindu Kush that requires every foreign visitor to take part in the Game, an endurance race over obstacles while local warriors give chase. A winner receives his life and one wish. The Special Intelligence Agency recruits Jonathan Cabot, a champion gymnast, to claim that wish for a satellite monitoring station on Parmistan soil, an early warning system against nuclear attack. Cabot is also told that his father, the operative Colonel Cabot, was sent to the Game and was never heard from again. His preparation brings in a martial arts instructor, a Japanese guru and Rubali, a princess of Parmistan, before he sets out for Karabal, a town by the Caspian Sea.

- Before it became a Kurt Thomas vehicle, the film rights were originally acquired by producer Jack H. Harris to develop as a potential star vehicle for Rock Hudson, before the rights later passed to Fred Weintraub.
- Actor Christopher Atkins was initially considered for the lead role of Jonathan Cabot before Olympic gymnast Kurt Thomas was cast instead.
- An unrelated Australian film, Day of the Panther, was rebranded and released in the Philippines as "Gymkata 2" to cash in on Gymkata's success, with promotional material dishonestly claiming that star Kurt Thomas had to be replaced by actor John Stazak after breaking his spine doing a stunt on the second day of shooting.
